Chapter 8

They set off on Sunday, late afternoon and left their derelict abode. After several hours of driving to a road that was severely remote off the turnpike, they found what appeared to be a path. This entire area seemed to be under a mountain and guarded by thick tree foliage. They followed a tiny dirt path in what seemed like hours. Damien could only go about forty miles an hour because there were no lights. The only lights were from his van’s high beams. The dirt path was rocky and was only wide enough to fit the vehicle. The path would go straight, then diverge into a left curve, and then take a sharp right. There were moments when large vines scratched across the exterior of the vehicle. What they suddenly heard sounded like pigs squealing in the distance.

“What was that?” Troy asked.

“I don’t know, but hopefully we will be out of this trail. This seems to go on forever,” Damien replied as he kept his eyes on the road.

Troy who was sitting in the passenger seat turned on the radio. The radio would be turned on by a small circular button. Troy tuned through some of the channels. The numbers were glowing blue on a thin rectangular screen. Troy stopped at 92.8 FM which had a news report.

The audio newscaster announced, “Breaking news, many folks in the surrounding areas of Carroll, Greene, Crawford, Calhoun, and Audubon counties have witnessed giant sized bats or gargoyles flying. Some extreme Christian zealots have even suggested they were ‘the Devil’s pets.’”

After hearing that oddity, Troy turned the knob to station 99.3.

“Stopped into a church / I passed along the way / well I got down my knees / and I pretend to pray / I pretend to pray / you know the preacher like the cold / the preacher the cold / he knows I’m going to stay / he knows I’m going to stay / California / Cali-for-nia dreamin’ / on such a winters day…” The Mama’s And Papa’s “California Dreamin’” song played.

“Nope,” Troy said under his breath as he changed the station to 102.4.

An over hyped up and energetic preacher started screaming, “The good lord is inside of you! Can I get a volunteer from the audience to step up right here and sing his kindly praise? You got to rise up!”

“Oh god,” Troy changed the station a fourth time to 105.66.

Troy was surprised of seeing an extra digit on the radio monitor. It was another fanatic preacher station, except the voice on this station had a deeper and darker tone. An ominous voice began speaking in some sort of Latin tongue. After a few seconds, the preacher spoke in English.

“You can only live forever once you have tasted the blood of the innocent. Hail to the ‘Great One’!” the deep mysterious voice said as a choir chanted in the back.

Troy turned off the radio. Troy felt uncomfortable as it reminded him of some demonic séance from horror flicks.

Damien with his eyes fixated on the road commented, “The radio always sucks.
